Where does the smell come from?
Boxing gloves start to smell over time because sweat, bacteria and sometimes even mould come together.
During training your body sweats to prevent it from overheating. This sweat is absorbed by the inner lining and padding of your gloves. Because it's warm and moist inside your gloves, it's the perfect environment for bacteria and mould.
They feed on your sweat and produce a particular odour in the process. This is precisely the unpleasant smell you notice after a while.
3 tips to keep your boxing gloves fresh
Once you know where the smell comes from, it's not that difficult to do something about it. With these tips you'll prevent your gloves from starting to smell, or get rid of the odour as much as possible.
- Air out: When fresh air gets into the gloves, they quickly lose their warmth, and that's exactly what bacteria don't like. So always take your gloves out of your bag as soon as you get home after training.
- Dry: Besides the warmth, the moisture also needs to go. This way bacteria no longer find an ideal environment, and it's also more pleasant for you the next time you train. You can dry the inside with a hairdryer on a low setting, for example.
- Antibacterial spray: Once your gloves smell, it's hard to get rid of the odour completely. But you can significantly reduce it and ensure that your gloves stay fresh for longer.
