Boxing Gloves, the Complete Buying Guide
Boxing gloves are the most important piece of equipment in boxing, kickboxing and Muay Thai. The right gloves protect your hands and joints, give you a secure feeling when striking and last for many years. At The Fight Company you'll find over 700 models for training, sparring and competition, for men, women and children, from entry-level models to professional competition gloves. In this guide we'll show you what to look for when buying.
Which boxing gloves are right for you?
Which gloves you need depends mainly on how and how often you train:
- Beginners: Just starting out? Then a solid, versatile model is sufficient. Take a look at our boxing gloves for beginners.
- Sparring: When sparring you protect your partner with well-padded gloves. Discover our sparring gloves.
- Competition and professional: For advanced boxers and competitors we have professional boxing gloves with precise fit.
- Heavy bag training: Hard training on the punching bag demands robust gloves with dense padding.
The right size in ounces (oz)
Boxing gloves are measured in ounces (oz). This describes the weight and therefore the padding, not the hand size. As a rough guideline by body weight:
- up to 60 kg: 10 to 12 oz
- 60 to 75 kg: 12 to 14 oz
- 75 to 90 kg: 14 to 16 oz
- over 90 kg: 16 oz or more
For sparring you should choose a size heavier (14 to 16 oz) to protect your training partner. For the little ones there are boxing gloves for children, and for a narrower fit our boxing gloves for women.
Material: leather or synthetic leather?
Leather boxing gloves are particularly durable, hold their shape and feel premium. They're the best choice if you train regularly. Synthetic leather boxing gloves are lighter, easy to care for and more affordable. They're ideal for beginners and occasional athletes.
Closure: hook-and-loop or lace-up?
With hook-and-loop you put the gloves on and take them off quickly and on your own. That's perfect for training. Lace-up boxing gloves fit particularly tight and evenly and are popular in competition.

The right accessories
Always wear hand wraps under your gloves. They support your wrist and knuckles and extend the life of your gloves. If you train kickboxing or Muay Thai, you'll complete your set with shin guards. For MMA you'll find suitable MMA gloves.
