In short: MMA gloves are open-finger gloves for Mixed Martial Arts that combine striking protection with maximum grip freedom. You'll find 139 models from brands such as Venum, Hayabusa, Booster and Caged from €27.95, available in sizes from XS to L/XL for training and sparring.
What are MMA gloves and what do you need them for
MMA gloves differ fundamentally from boxing gloves: they leave the fingers free so you can grip, clinch and execute takedowns. The padded striking surface protects your knuckles when striking, whilst the open palm offers full freedom of movement for grappling techniques. These gloves are essential for MMA training, sparring and competitions, as they enable the unique combination of striking and ground fighting that makes up Mixed Martial Arts.
Sparring gloves versus competition gloves
When buying MMA gloves, you need to distinguish between two main types. Sparring gloves have significantly more padding (often 7–8 oz) and a larger striking surface to better protect your training partner and your own hands. Competition gloves are more compact and lighter (usually 4–6 oz), with less padding for more realistic striking impact. For training, we generally recommend sparring models such as the Venum Challenger Sparring 3.0, which offer more protection. You should only use competition gloves if you're training for a fight or competing.
Choosing the right size for your MMA gloves
MMA gloves are offered in clothing sizes: XS, S, S/M, M, L and L/XL. The size determines how well the gloves fit your hand and how effectively you can form a fist. To do this, measure the circumference of your dominant hand at the widest point below the knuckles. Up to about 20 cm usually fits S, between 20–22 cm you choose M, above that L or XL. The gloves should fit snugly without restricting blood circulation. Gloves that are too loose slip during grappling and offer less protection; models that are too tight restrict your mobility and can cause pain.
Brands and materials compared
In our range you'll find MMA gloves from established brands such as Venum, Hayabusa, Booster, Ringhorns, Caged, King, Adidas, Super Pro, Elevate and Everlast. Most models are made from synthetic leather, which is durable and easy to care for. Venum offers solid entry-level models from €27.95 with the Challenger series, whilst Hayabusa scores in the premium segment with anatomically shaped gloves and multi-layer padding. Look for reinforced stitching on the fingers and wrist, a secure hook-and-loop fastening and sufficient ventilation on the palm. The padding should consist of multiple foam layers to absorb impacts effectively.
Frequently asked questions
Which MMA gloves for beginners?
For beginners, sparring gloves with more padding are best, as they protect your hands and your partner's whilst you build technique. The Venum Challenger Sparring 3.0 is a proven entry-level model with good value for money from €27.95. Make sure the gloves fit well and have a stable hook-and-loop fastening. Initially choose a medium size (M or L) and test whether you can comfortably close your fist and open it again.
What is the difference between MMA gloves and boxing gloves?
MMA gloves have open fingers and thin padding so you can grip and execute grappling techniques. Boxing gloves enclose the entire hand, are considerably heavier (10–16 oz) and offer more padding, as boxing involves striking exclusively. For pure striking training you can use boxing gloves, but as soon as clinch work, takedowns or ground fighting come into training, you need MMA gloves. The two glove types are not interchangeable.
How do I care for my MMA gloves properly?
Let your MMA gloves air-dry after every training session, ideally opened out with the hook-and-loop fasteners undone. Never stuff wet gloves into your bag, as this will cause bacteria and odours to form. You can wipe down the outside with a damp cloth and occasionally treat the inside with disinfectant spray. Avoid direct sunlight and radiators, as these make the material brittle. With good care, high-quality MMA gloves will last several years of intensive training.
