A mouthguard is part of the basic equipment in combat sports, regardless of the level you train at. Even a single uncontrolled strike can injure teeth, jaw or soft tissue in the mouth. A good gum shield absorbs the impact, provides reliable protection and fits so comfortably that it doesn't hinder your breathing or training. At The Fight Company you'll find mouthguards for boxing, MMA, Muay Thai and all other combat sports, from Venum, Shock Doctor, Safejawz and Booster.
Why is a mouthguard so important?
In combat sports, hard strikes can never be completely avoided, not even during controlled sparring. A gum shield protects not only the teeth, but also the gums, lips and jaw joint. Anyone who trains without a mouthguard risks injuries that are expensive and time-consuming to treat. In most gyms, a combat sports mouthguard is compulsory during sparring, and for good reason.
What types of mouthguard are there?
Not every mouthguard is the same; depending on training intensity and personal preference, there are different models.
Boil-and-Bite Mouthguard
The standard in combat sports. You briefly dip the mouthguard in hot water, place it on your upper teeth and bite it into shape. This way it adapts individually to your tooth structure and fits considerably better than a non-fitted model. Simple, affordable and perfectly adequate for most athletes.
Multi-Layer Mouthguard
For intensive sparring and competition. Multiple layers absorb impact energy better than basic models. Anyone who trains regularly in full contact or takes part in competitions is better off with these.
Mouthguard for Children
Children need a gum shield specially designed for smaller jaws and teeth. Most children's mouthguards are also available as boil-and-bite and can be easily fitted at home.
How do you fit your mouthguard?
Fitting a boil-and-bite mouthguard is simple and only takes a few minutes. You'll need a bowl of hot water – not boiling – and a bowl of cold water.
Place the mouthguard in the hot water for about 30 seconds, remove it and let it drip briefly. Then place it on your upper teeth, press it firmly with your fingers and only then bite down – moderately, not too hard. Then briefly cool it in cold water. Always follow the instructions from the respective manufacturer, as the exact details may vary slightly depending on the model.
Which mouthguard suits your combat sport?
The requirements differ depending on the sport – here's a brief overview.
Mouthguard Boxing
In boxing , direct punches hit the jaw; shock absorption is paramount. A well-fitted boxing mouthguard with sufficient material thickness is the most important thing here. A black mouthguard is the standard in many gyms – discreet and functional.
Mouthguard MMA
MMA mouthguards must fit securely even during grappling and on the ground. During clinching and in ground positions, it must not slip or hinder breathing. Compact models with a good fit are the right choice here.
Mouthguard Muay Thai
In Muay Thai , punches, kicks, knees and elbows are used; the protection must be correspondingly robust. A Muay Thai mouthguard with multi-layer padding gives you the necessary safety even with hard strikes.

Caring for Your Mouthguard: How to Make It Last Longer
Rinse with water after each training session and clean thoroughly. Disinfect regularly and store in a ventilated case, don't leave it in your sports bag. Check briefly for cracks or deformations before each training session. A damaged mouthguard no longer provides reliable protection and should be replaced.
Frequently Asked Questions About Mouthguards
Is a mouthguard really necessary?
Yes, without any doubt. Even a single uncontrolled strike can break teeth or injure the jaw. Dental costs for such injuries far exceed the price of a good mouthguard. In most gyms a mouthguard is mandatory during sparring, but even in training where it's not compulsory it should be part of your essential kit.
Can you use any mouthguard for boxing?
In principle yes, but not every mouthguard offers the same level of protection. Cheap universal models without customisation often fit poorly and offer less protection. For boxing we recommend boil-and-bite models that you can customise individually. For intensive sparring and competition a multi-layer mouthguard from Venum or Shock Doctor is worth the investment.
How often should you replace a mouthguard?
That depends on training intensity and care. With regular sparring we recommend replacing it every six to twelve months. As soon as the mouthguard shows cracks, has deformed or no longer fits properly, it's time for a new one.
What is the difference between a mouthguard and a gum shield?
Both terms describe the same product – in English mouthguard and gum shield are used interchangeably. In combat sports the mouthguard is for boxing, MMA and Muay Thai, not a medical dental guard.
